Ok, so my roommate and I just watched the incredibles 2 (it was fucking amazing btw) and my roommate pointed out something to me that has me really pumped!
So there’s this new character by the name of voyd
She’s really cool. She’s got the power to open extradimensional portals (think blink from X-men but more range). And she might be a trans woman!
First let’s take a look at incredibles art style. In this art style, men tend to have tall, slender heads
Where as women tend to have short, wide heads
Now scroll on back up to voyd. Her head is tall and slender.
Now, moving on to the body. Women in their prime in the incredibles art style tend to have big breasts (see elastigirl and mirage). But Voyd is a lot more flat chested. Also, she is of comparable height to elastigirl, but her shoulders are much much more broad.
Now take a look at the hair. The incredibles and incredibles 2 take place in 1962. Dyeing your hair outrageous colors was not commonplace back then, and for the most part the incredibles have normal hair colors and not like purple anime hair. But trans people will often dye their hair outrageous colors like that shade of blue, because it’s a part of their body that they can easily change. They may not be able to get on hormones yet, or it’s taking forever for the changes to happen, but you can dye your hair in just a few hours.

and as a trans person I’m excited and encouraged by the fact that so many people feel like it’s really important to say THEY WERE TRANS WOMEN OF COLOR. That it’s important that they’re trans, and that Sylvia Rivera was Puerto Rican, and that Marsha P. Johnson was Black.

but as a bisexual it kills me a little bit every time that nobody ever says they were *bisexual* trans women of color.

like, particularly since we’re specifically talking about the people who started the riots, people who were fundamental in the movement for the rest of their lives. We’re talking about Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson. Who were bisexual. [Citations: Sylvia Rivera, Marsha P. Johnson]

[Yes: there are a lot more bisexual/trans/people of color involved, including legendary Black trans activist Miss Major, who is amazing and whose sexuality I don’t know. (UPDATE: SHE’S BI TOOOOOO AND NONBINARY JUST LIKE THEM 💙💜💖 I’m on mobile so I can’t embed a link, but for now just search my blog for “Miss Major” to get the source.)

But this discussion tends to be centered particularly around these two and the “what is a white gay man doing throwing the first brick” fiasco.]

Because tbh, bisexual issues are so de-emphasized within the queer community that I think it would be interpreted as if I were tugging on the community’s sleeve and meekly piping up, “They were also Baby Boomers! Don’t forget!”

But today I figured out how to explain this.

When you say:

they weren’t *gay white men*

they were *trans women of color*

you’re correcting “[cis] men” with “trans women.”

You’re correcting “white” with “of color”.

And you’re erasing their sexualities as trans women of color.

You’re acting as though “trans woman” replaces “gay man”, as though trans is your sexual orientation. Or as though you can only be one kind of queer, and if you’re trans then that’s it, you can’t also count as bi, gay, or lesbian.

You’re also telling other bi and pan people that our identities and our contributions don’t matter – that no matter what we do, we’ll be remembered as we always have been, as something other than who and what we were.

You’re feeding the people who say things like “bisexuals don’t belong at Pride” and “when bisexuals fight for our issues they can be part of our community,” as if we haven’t been here from the literal beginning of the modern-day movement (and before). And as if we don’t share many of the same issues.

So: thank you for re-centering trans women of color in queer history. And please start re-centering their bisexuality too.

Hi! Totally not a weird question. Just a heads up: if you were to get a monsplasty (or a “mons resection”, as they’re commonly called in trans guy bottom surgery circles) without meta or phallo, chances are that insurance won’t cover it/it’ll be billed as a cosmetic procedure. Some surgeons include monsplasty by default with metoidioplasty, others do so on a case-by-case basis, and others don’t offer it at all.

A “mons resection” is a bit like a mini tummy tuck—an incision is made (depending on personal anatomy) across the top of the mons pubis or slightly above it; the incision can be a few inches or span all the way from one hip to another. The mons is defatted and your junk is also pulled up higher on your body.

My surgeon, Dr. O’Brien-Coon, offers mons resection in the first stage (many surgeons don’t until the second), which was a big deciding factor for me—I definitely need one, and the sooner I can the better for my dysphoria. Any additional work that needs done will happen during second stage/he’ll do liposuction around my dick if need be.

The life of inmate Lindsay Saunders-Velez, a nineteen-year-old transgender woman, has been a living hell since she was transferred from a center for juvenile females to a men’s prison. Even though she’s been raped twice in a matter of months, Colorado Department of Corrections officials refuse to transfer her to a female institution or even back to her previous pod at the men’s facility, where she had friends who supported her.

More recently, Saunders-Velez reported that she’d been threatened by fellow inmates in the section of the prison where she’s currently confined — a unit whose dangers have been demonstrated to her on multiple occasions. According to attorney Paula Greisen, who represents Saunders-Velez, her jailers reacted by placing her in solitary confinement, supposedly for her own safety — even though she’d done nothing wrong — before ordering her to stay in the area occupied by those who menaced her in the first place.

We cannot advocate for the #MeToo movement while ignoring Tarana Burke’s founding principle that this is a movement to empower vulnerable women. We cannot advocate against the prison industrial complex, while ignoring the violence this system inflicts on women in particular the trans women of color in our communities. Trans women are regularly sent to men’s facilities where they encounter higher rates of physical and sexual violence, lack of transgender related health care, transphobia, and self harm due to solitary confinement.

Talking
People talk to themselves and that includes Deaf people
I sometimes sign to myself, but whether I mutter or sign depends on why I’m talking to myself
Cooking? Verbal speech to keep myself on task. Trying to work out an emotional scene? Signed speech.
And using my whole body to talk to myself is allows more creative freedom
Also even if a Deaf person identifies as non-verbal, they might still talk
maybe a hearing person wouldn’t recognise it as speech, but sound is a part of signed language
so muttering and breath-noises are common.
It’s also worth mentioning that “sounding deaf” isn’t what you think it is.
We don’t yell or make incoherent noises (usually)
and even if we do, that’s fine
but generally, people who are Deaf over-enunciate and speak very clearly.
This is either intuitive and perfected over time, or taught in speech therapy.
“How much can you hear”
People love to ask this question, and I can’t give them an answer.
Unless I’m feeling snippy. Then I usually ask “Well how much do you hear?”
They can’t answer either.
Ergo, if you’re hearing and writing a d/Deaf character, don’t compare the way they hear the world to the way that a fully hearing person would.
Be particularly wary of percentages
I’m 75% deaf
and I have no idea what that means
because hearing loss is very nuanced.
I’ve met someone who is 80% deaf, but she could hear in pitch ranges that I couldn’t.
Hearing aids don’t emulate sound either
so how a d/Deaf character hears with them in won’t be at the level a hearing person would
it’s also very obvious that the sound is electronically enhanced.
Putting in earplugs and walking around like that will not provide “Deaf experience”
you’re better to listen to Deaf people telling you how they experience the world.
The craft itself
Don’t fret about your word choices initially
you have the privilege of hearing and that’s okay
you take sound for granted, don’t worry about it.
(Yet)
Once you’ve got the story how you want it, set aside a whole revision just for using the right language if your POV character is Deaf
printing out your manuscript in a different font is very helpful
it’ll make it easier to pick out “red flag” words and phrases.
Whenever you find a chunk of writing focused on sound/hearing, highlight it
and then tear it apart.
Can your character actually hear that owl hooting, or would the background noise be too blurry?
Would your character hear the sound as it is, or would they have an association that overrules the sense?
I.e. do they see a raven open it’s beak and think about black bubbles of ink in their throat? I know I do.
Cross out any hyper-focus on sounds or re-write them in a different way.
The golden rule
Don’t write deaf characters
Write people who happen to be deaf
Please, include us.
